More Africa
More Africa is a registered non-profit organization based in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Ellen van Beers, a social worker from the Netherlands, founded it in 2015 after recognizing te urgent need for inclusive care for children with disabilities on the island. Founded with a deep commitment to inclusion and equality, we support children and young adults with physical and/or mental disabilities. Many of these children are excluded from mainstream education and healthcare systems.
The special centre offers special education, physical therapy, medical help, vocational training and daycare to children who are not admitted to the regular government school because of their disabilities.
We focus on each individuals abilities, not their limitations, helping them grow in confidence, gain skills and become active members of their communities. By working closely with families, local partners and volunteers. We aim to create a more compassionate and inclusive society in Zanzibar. Where every child has the chance to learn, develop, and thrive. At More Africa, we believe that disability is not inability. Every person deserves a future filled with hope, dignity and opportunity.

- Access to education: Children who once had no access to school now receive personalized special education that matches their abilities and needs.
- Overcoming exclusion: We support children who often miss out on regular schools and health services because of their disabilities. - Improving quality of life: Through physical therapy, medical care and daily support, we enhance physical and emotional well-being and gained mobility, reduced pain and improved quality of life.
- Empowering families: By offering daycare and education, we relieve pressure on families and involve them in their child’s development. It also gives them time to work, rest and care for their families, knowing their child is safe and supported.
- Changing mindsets & Community awareness: By showing what children with disabilities can achieve, we work to reduce stigma and promote inclusion in the broader society and create greater acceptance and understanding.
- Pathways to independence: Vocational training helps young adults develop practical skills, boosting self-confidence and opening doors to future employment.

Our work
Special education
Many of our unique talents are not accepted into government schools. At More Africa, we offer individualized education- and careplans that meet each child at their level. With small classes (nursery, daycare, primary, advance and 16+) and trained staff, we focus on life skills, communication, personal development and scholar skills—celebrating progress, no matter how small.
Physical Therapy
Physical disabilities often affect mobility and independence. Our qualified physiotherapists work with each child to improve strength, coordination and movement, helping them live more comfortably and confidently. Therapy runs through daily routines, ensuring it stays consistent and engaging.
At More Africa, we provide specialized physical therapy for children with severe cerebral palsy (CP) to help improve their mobility, reduce discomfort and enhance their quality of life.
Each child receives a tailored therapy plan. We design these plans to meet the specific needs and challenges of each child, taking into account their age, physical abilities and overall health.
Medical care
Healthcare in Zanzibar, particularly for children with disabilities, can be a challenge due to limited access to specialized care and medical resources. More Africa works to bridge these gaps by providing essential healthcare services to our children and their families. At More Africa, we prioritize the health and well-being of the children we support. Recognizing that children with disabilities often have specific medical needs. We offer comprehensive healthcare services that go beyond basic care to ensure every child has the chance to thrive. We offer regular medical checkups, provide medication and bring kids to specialists when necessary. Besides, we offer parental support to make sure the parents are engaged.

Daycare
Caring for a child with a disability is a full-time job. We offer daycare for kids with multiple disabilities, providing families with a safe, loving environment so their child is cared for during the day. It also gives children the chance to interact with others, take part in structured activities, senses stimulation, physical therapy and develop social and emotional skills.
Vocational training
As children grow into young adults, we guide them toward independence and purpose. Our vocational training programs teach practical skills: such as soap making, candle making, gardening, tailoring, jewellery making, crafts or hospitality. So they can gain confidence, independence and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
Together, these services help build a future where children and young adults with disabilities are not just cared for, but truly included and empowered.
